The biggest acting role Duke Ellington ever had was his earliest, in 1929's Black and Tan. By then the sun was setting on the Jazz Age that Ellington had helped mint with his music, and his later work in film was reduced mostly to cameos and scoring. But in his debut, Ellington displayed the style sense that made him a fashion touchstone (in clothing as well as music) of the Roaring Twenties. He rarely appeared in photos without a waistcoat undergirding his suits. When he wore a tux, he turned it out, wearing long tails and sometimes a top hat. In December, NEWSWEEK argued that new signs of life were showing in the AIDS activism movement. Let's hope so. Recent research published in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that within certain populations in America, the prevalence of HIV-infected people is higher than in certain parts of Africa:

More than 1 in 30 adults in Washington, D.C., are HIV-infected—a prevalence higher than that reported in Ethiopia, Nigeria, or Rwanda. Certain U.S. subpopulations are particularly hard hit. In New York City, 1 in 40 blacks, 1 in 10 men who have sex with men, and 1 in 8 injection-drug users are HIV-infected, as are 1 in 16 black men in Washington, D.C. In several U.S. urban areas, the HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men is as high as 30%—as compared with a general-population prevalence of 7.8% in Kenya and 16.9% in South Africa.

What’s interesting is that the research shows that a person’s sexual network, more than just his or her lifestyle choices, defines the risk of getting HIV in America. So, black and Hispanic women are at increased risk due to the instability of their sexual relationships —which is attributed to the high rate of incarceration of men in their networks—and their vulnerable or dependent economic situation, which may cause them to be fearful of suggesting safer-sex options to their companions. And black men who have sex with men are at high risk because of the likelihood of their choosing to engage in sexual activity with someone who is racially similar, and because of the prevalence of HIV within their sexual networks.

Fashion week features few black runway models

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A dearth of black models strutting the catwalks is a persistent issue in the fashion world and while the numbers have improved, there are still too few, fashion observers say.

U.S. | Lifestyle

At New York's semi-annual Fashion Week ending on Friday, many designers used two or three black models, in the more than 30 shows attended by Reuters reporters. Several only used one, and some had none. Most of the shows featured between 12 and 25 models.

Labels Tracy Reese, DKNY and Diane von Furstenberg displayed a high number of black models this season while others, such as Vivienne Tam, did not use any.

Too few industry types are following the lead of former Vogue editor Grace Mirabella, the first to use a black model on the magazine's cover, said Tim Gunn, creative director at Liz Claiborne and co-host of Bravo television's "Project Runway."

Some designers consider cultural and ethnic diversity on the runway, "but there are not enough," he said.

While the issue was once left to pioneering black models Iman and Naomi Campbell to note, attention has grown recently.

This year, Vogue Italia's first "Black Issue," with more than 20 black models, created worldwide buzz and sold out.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, the U.S. industry trade group, has said it is up to the designers to establish ethnic diversity. This season, the group's president, Diane von Furstenberg, urged them to seek a diversity of models.

Blacks make up about 13 percent of the U.S. population, according to census data.

Some insiders said fashion still discriminates.

"Visually on the runways, it has improved," said Bethann Hardison, a 1970s African-American runway model. "But the results are still racist. You choose the same white and you never go towards the brown or the dark."

Designer Tracy Reese said the question of diversity on the runway needs to be brought up again and again to ensure change.

"If it's too exclusionary, it puts me off," she said.

CLOTHES COME FIRST

More than three decades after Yves Saint Laurent hired the first black model for his collection, many designers say it's their right to cast models regardless of race.

Rubin Singer, who said he was criticized for "going too ethnic" by using a high number of black models last season, said his choice always depends on the designs and what sells.

"I'm dressing women here," he said. "I'm building a business and building my customer base."

Designer Michael Angel said: "I don't ever think about color, nor do I think of race. That is the most backward way to think."

Other designers blamed the modeling agencies.

"It's very hard to find them," said Adriano Iodice. "If you ask an agency to send 25 composites of models, only two or three of them will be black."

IMG Models did not return calls for comment. Neal Hamil, of Elite Model Management, said his agency was "stepping in the right direction" and he sees progress.

"I believe the fashion industry has taken note on this serious issue. The greater number of ethnic models seen on the runway is apparent," he said.

Others said discussions of the issue and media attention had stirred the industry's consciousness.

"There has been a definite surge, to use the military term, of much diversity, particularly more black girls," said Andre Leon Talley, editor-at-large at Vogue. "There's been a series of conversations. It's a fresh moment."

A spotlight on race due to Barack Obama's presidential nomination could spill into fashion, commentators said.

"It is my hope because of Michelle Obama that fashion will grasp it and redefine beauty," said fashion author Kathryn Finney, referring to the Democratic candidate's wife.

Gunn added that not just the runways need to change.

"I would like to see more diversity among fashion designers," he said. "With more support for designers of color, that can help this issue as well."

7.Don’t get too greedy… pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered.

9.No matter how successful you are, you shouldn't’t stop learning.
10.Spending money on good lawyers and accountants will save you more money in the long run.
11.Don’t pick a stupid company name and if you do, don’t change it later on.
12.Hiring employees won’t solve most of your problems.
13.Be agile because slow and steady won’t win the race.
14.Being agile isn’t enough, you also have to be scrappy too.
15.Having a good business partner will be a key factor in your success.
16.Don’t be afraid of the unknown.
17.It is easier to save money than it is to make it.
18.You don’t always have to innovate; there is nothing wrong with copying.
19.Have a marketing plan.
20.Don’t under estimate your competition; you can’t always know what they are doing.
21.Watching movies like Boiler Room, will teach you how to sell.
22.If you don’t have a business mentor, you better get one.
23.Your income will be the average of your 5 closest friends, so pick them wisely.
24.Diversifying is a good way to play things safe.
25.It doesn’t matter what you want, it only matters what your customers want.
26.When others are fearful, you should be greedy. And when they are greedy you should be fearful.
27.You don’t always have to pay for advice. You’ll be amazed with the free advice you can get pick up from the web.

BA: Kool, so you're a rapper from Miami?

SH: YES, BORN N RAISED IN MIAMI AKA DA CRIB.

BA: How do you compare ur style to other Miami rappers? Or do you even compare yourself to other Miami rappers at all?

SH:I TRY TO DIFFER MY RAPS FROM WHAT A TYPICAL MIAMI RAPPER SOUND LIKE, NOT KNOCKING IT, BUT JUS TRYIN TO BE DIFFERENT.

BA:I feel ya. Ok, so on your mixtape you linked up with Piccalo on the "get back to the money" joint. How did that happen?

SH: MAN, I WAS IN THERE CHILLIN WORKING WITH PHATBOYBEATS AN UP AND COMING PRODUCER, ON ANOTHER MIXTAPE SONG. AND WE WERE RUNNING THROUGH ALL MY TRACKS AND THE LEGEND HIMSELF WAS LIKE "I WANT TO HOP ON ONE". TO ME IT FELT LIKE AN HONOR, IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ANY FEATURES ON DA MIXTAPE. BUT WHO CAN HONESTLY TELL DESLOC PICCALO NO? I TOLD HIM "YOU'RE THE LEGEND, DO WHAT YOU WANT", AND HE WENT IN THERE AND DID HIS THANG!

BA: Yeah, that's one of my favorites from the mixtape. Which track do you expect people to relate to the most?

SH:UMM, I DID A LIL SOMETHING ON MARVIN GAYE'S SEXUAL HEALING BEAT,
I TRIED TO GIVE HOPE WITH DAT FREESTYLE. ITS CALL "WAKE UP" BY THE WAY IM SURE ALOT OF PPL WILL RELATE TO IT.

BA: Kool, so, i linked up wit D-MAC a few weeks back, he's on your track "ya feel me", how did that happen?

SH: WELL, YOU KNOW DMAC AND ME GO WAY BACK, HE'S ALSO ONE OF MIAMI BEST KEPT SECRETS, HE IS A FORCE TO RECKON WITH WHEN IT COMES TO THIS RAP SHIT! BUT, HE PITCHED ME THE BEAT WITH A HOOK, I TOLD HIM I FUCKS WITH IT AND AFTER MY BDAY PARTY THAT SAME NIGHT WE DROVE 6 HRS TO MIAMI TO RECORD IT. LAYED IT DOWN AND THERE IT WAS, YA FEEL ME FT DMAC.

BA: Lol, why did y'all make that mission to record it that night?

SH: IN LIFE ITS GOOD TO GO WITH YOUR INSTINCTS, I WAS FEELING IT, WROTE DA LYRICS ON DA WAY TO MIAMI.

BA: Earlier you described Piccalo as a legend, who else do you look up to in the industry?

SH:TOO MANY TO NAME, RIP 2PAC, RIP BIGGIE! I STILL LISTEN TO THEIR MUSIC AND SEE WHAT EMOTIONS THEY BROUGHT TO HIP HOP. NAS, WAYNE,WYCLEF, JEEZY, WU TANG CLAN, DR. DRE AND EMINEM ALSO GIVES ME INSPIRATION.
